CARBON NEUTRALITY: POTENTIAL AND CHALLENGES FOR KAZAKHSTAN

December 18, 2020 at 15.00 on the Google Meet platform, an expert meeting on “CARBON NEUTRALITY: POTENTIAL AND CHALLENGES FOR KAZAKHSTAN” was held.

The event was organized by the Almaty University of Energy and Communications named after Gumarbek Daukeev (AUES), SEC “GREEN ACADEMY”, with the participation of the Center for Environmental Investment “Carbon Lab” (Russia).

Purpose of the event was to discuss international experience in decarbonization as well as the ways to achieve a carbon neutrality in Kazakhstan

Welcoming speeches were delivered by Mr. Sven-Olov Karlsson– EU Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Mr. Akhmetzhan Primkulov – Vice-Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources and Dr. Saule Sagintaeva – AUES Rector. 

The event was moderated by Dr. Bakhyt Yesekina – Member of the Council for the transition to a “green economy” under the President of Kazakhstan, Director of the SEC “Green Academy”.

Speakers of the event were: Mr. Jan Willem van de Ven – Associate Director, Lead, Head of Climate Finance & Carbon Markets, Energy Efficiency and Climate Change team, EBRD, Mr. Vincent Duijnhouwer – Associate Director, Lead, Country Engagement, Energy Efficiency and Climate Change team, EBRD, Dr. Mikhail Uylkin–General director of the LLP “Carbon Lab (Russia), Dr. Henri Waisman – Climate Program – Lead of the initiative «Deep Decarbonization Pathways (DDP)», Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (France), Dr. Georgy Safonov – Director of the Center for Environmental Economics and Natural Resources, Higher School of Economics (Russia), Ms. Kumi Kitamori – Head of the OECD Department of the Green Growth and International Relations, Mr. Jean-Francois Lengelle – Project manager in charge of the Eurasia Business Forum, OECD Global Relations Secretariat, Mr. Daulet Akhmetov– Head of the Кazakh Energy Assosiation.

Representatives of Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, EU, EBRD, OECD, WorldBank, IDDRI, CILT, Green Bridge, KazNU, IGTIPC, International Science and Technology Center, AUES, High School of Economics, Nazarbayev University, Biodiversity Conservation Fund of Kazakhstan, Green Finance Centre, ERI, “KazakhInvest”, KazynaCapitalManagement, ADB, МSU, UNDP, scientists, NGOsand the others attended the event.

Based on the results of the event, recommendations (draft) to the Government of Kazakhstan were adopted.
