REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL EMISSIONS IS A PRIORITY FOR ENTERPRISES

A meeting of the Council for the Transition to a Green Economy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Energy, the akims of Pavlodar Region and the city of Almaty, heads of major energy companies, and representatives of the expert community.

During the discussion, the Director of the Research and Educational Center “Green Academy”, Doctor of Economics and Professor, B.K. Yessekina, put forward the following recommendations:

1. To accelerate the adoption of the Roadmap for the implementation of the Carbon Neutrality Strategy of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2060.

2. To encourage enterprises to begin addressing the certification (verification) of greenhouse gas emissions in order to participate in the mechanisms of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and to attract climate finance for decarbonization purposes.

3. For the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, in cooperation with the Research and Education Center “Zhasyl Academy” and with the support of international financial institutions, to conduct training seminars for regional authorities on OECD indicators, Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), and the mechanisms of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

4. In line with the implementation of the “Listening State” principle and in execution of the instructions of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to recommend that the Prime Minister’s Office, together with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, establish a dedicated portal on the Government’s website for the activities of the Council for the Transition to a Green Economy.
