BLOCKCHAIN FOR ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND GHGs MONITORING

On March 17, 2018 Scientific Research and Educational Center “Green Academy” together with Mayor of Astana city with the support of the “Russian Carbon” Foundation conducted in Astana a workshop-training on the theme “Digitalization of production: blockchain for energy consumption and GHGs monitoring.”

The event was held to study approaches of digitalizing production and using blockchain platform to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions within the framework of the national obligations of the Paris Climate Agreement.

As it is known, in the fight against climate change and the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as to implement the President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s message “New Opportunities for Development in the Conditions of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”, goals have been set to reduce the energy intensity of GDP by 30% and reduce country emissions by 2030 by 15-25%. According to experts in order tosolve these problems, Kazakhstan’s enterprises need to develop comprehensive corporate strategies for transition to low-carbon development, providing for systemic measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions and waste using digitalization methods.

The workshop was opened by the Director of SREC “Green Academy”, Doctor of Economics, Professor Bakhyt Yessekina and Deputy Chairman of the Board of JSC “Astana Innovations” Mr. Meiram Dusyukov.

The trainers were Mr. Georgy Safonov, Director of the Center for Environmental Economics and Nature Management of Higher School of Economics, Mr. Alexei Shadrin, Executive Director of the Russian Carbon Foundation, Mr. Maxim Avdeev, Founder and CEO of Blocker and Fintech Accelerator Inspi Russia, CBDO Life.SREDA VC (Russian Federation).

The participants of the of the workshop were heads and specialists of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of Mayor of Astana city and its subordinate enterprises, Astana Innovations, Samruk-Energo, NK “KazMunaiGas”, National Academy of Mining Sciences of RK, “Kazakhstan Communal Systems” LLP, etc. They noted the possibility of using the blockchain platform for monitoring energy consumption and controlling emissions in various sectors of the economy.
