GLOBAL METHANE PLEDGE. POLITICAL DIALOGUE IN ASTANA

Currently, the climate agenda is becoming relevant at many international conferences and summits at the global level. This is due to the increase in climate change, which has covered almost all countries of the world, including the Republic of Kazakhstan.

As is known, at the end of November 2023, the 28th UNFCCC Conference (COP-28) will be held in Dubai (UAE), where the implementation of country climate strategies adopted under the Paris Agreement will be discussed. One of the priority areas of COP-28 is the Agenda for joining the Global Methane Pledge (GMP), which was initiated at COP-26 (Glasgow). This commitment has already been joined by 150 countries that have signed the Paris Agreement.

At present, Kazakhstan, being a responsible participant in the global process to prevent climate change, has adopted the Strategy for achieving carbon neutrality until 2060 and Updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to the global response to climate change of 15-25% of 1990 levels. However, our country has not yet joined the Global Methane Initiative, which increases vulnerability to access to climate finance and the introduction of a border carbon tax on the export of raw materials from 2024.

In this regard, on September 8 this year in Astana, the REC “Green Academy” together with the Committee on Ecology and Nature Management, Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the MENR of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the support of international partners holds a Round table on «GLOBAL METHANE PLEDGE. POLITICAL DIALOGUE IN ASTANA”. The purpose of the event is to discuss the international experience of joining GMP, incl. countries of Central Asia, and the results of a country capacity assessment carried out by international and national experts, as well as the development of an agreed position in the negotiation process at the upcoming COP-28 conference.

The Speakers for this event will be the representatives of state bodies, national (ERI, Zhasyl Damu JSC) and international experts from the EU, EBRD, USAID, who study the problems of methane decarbonization at the global and national levels.
