DECARBONIZATION TECHNOLOGIES OF THE METALLURGICAL INDUSTRY AND ESG

On February 17, 2023, a Round Table on the topic “DECARBONIZATION TECHNOLOGIES OF THE METALLURGICAL INDUSTRY AND ESG” was held in Temirtau, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, REC “Green Academy”, a delegation of the EU with the support of the AMT.

Deputy Chairman of the Industrial Development Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural development of the Republic of Kazakhstan T.B. Zholmagambetov, Ambassador of Italy to the Republic of Kazakhstan M. Alberti, and Director of the Department of Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan M.A. Shiranov addressed welcoming remarks to the participants of the event — representatives of central and local government agencies, EBRD, DENA, AGMP, AMT, Gumilev ENU, Seifullin KazAgro, CarIU, Research Institutes and universities, Public Councils and NGOs of the Karaganda region.

The moderator of the meeting was a member of the Council for Green Economy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Director of the REC “Green Academy”, Dr. B.K. Yessekina.

Presentations on the problems of decarbonization of the metallurgical sector were made by: Zhanibek Baidulla, Director of the ESG Department of Samruk Kazyna JSC; Viktor Kovalenko, Partner of EY, Head of Decarbonization Services in Central Asia, the Caucasus and Ukraine; Christina Maro Marcos, General Manager for Ecology and Climate Change of ArcelorMittal; Pascal Hader-Weinmann, Head of the Strategy and Policy Group, German Energy Agency (DENA); Gulnaz Bisenova, Director of the Ecology Department, AMME; Dr. Medet Junussov, Nazarbayev University; Dr. Seitgali Galiyev, Director of NC “Mining Technology“; Dr. Gulmira Nasyrova, Head of the Department of Finance, Gumilev ENU; Dr. Bayanda Dikhanbayev, S. Seifullin KAZAGRU.

At the end of the event, a Memorandum of cooperation in the field of research of decarbonization technologies was signed between JSC “AMT-Temirtau”, REC “Green Academy” and Kgiu.

Following the results of the event, it is planned to develop and send recommendations to the Government on the further implementation of the Strategy for achieving Carbon Neutrality of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2060.
