Towards COP-26: PRESENTATION OF THE FIRST MONOGRAPH “DECARBONIZATION OF EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRIES OF THE KAZAKHSTAN REPUBLIC”

On October 22, 2021, JSC “National Geological Exploration Company “Qazgeology” together with the  Gumarbek Daukeev  Almaty University of Energy and Communications (AUES) and the Green Academy Scientific and Educational Center hold a presentation of the first monograph within the CIS on the topic “DECARBONIZATION OF EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRIES  OF THE  REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN“.

Member of the Green Economy Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Head of the REC “Green Academy” Dr.BakhytYessekina, Member of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mrs.Olga Bulavkina and Chairman of the Board of JSC “Qazgeology” Mr.Anvar Boranbayev opened the event with a welcoming speech.

The presentation were attended by representatives of the Office of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Senate of the Republic of Kazakhstan, key ministries of the MEGPR, ME, MNE, MES, the delegation of the EU, the US Embassy, JSC “Samruk-Kazyna”, AIFC, KMG, KazNU, ENU, KBTU, AUES named after Gumurbek Daukeev, KazNITU after Satpaev, and many others. The event was also broadcasted online via zoom. In total, more than 80 people attended the event.

The aim of the meeting  was  to accelerate activities to achieve the Paris Agreement goals and discussion the national platform before COP-26 that will be held on 31-st October till 14-th November in Glasgow (UK).  Particpants have noted that Kazakhstan can become a leader in decarbonization by investing in realistic technology solutions, empowering citizens and correlating activities in key areas such as industrial policy, finance and research, while ensuring social justice for a flexible transition.

Achievement of the stated goals necessitates a radical restructuring of technological structure of the national economy and the adoption of decisive and systemic measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, primarily in the extractive industries, in the next decade.

This monograph, published under the editorship of the Academician of the National Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Geological –Mineralogical Sciences, Dr. Serikbek Daukei  and based on study of the  international experience and domestic research generalization. In monograph the issues of the global energy transition and achievement of carbon neutrality in economies with high carbon potential have been considered, the state and ways of the extractive industries of decarbonization in the national economy have been analyzed, and the prospects for the introduction of low-carbon technologies in the fuel and energy and mining and metallurgical complexes of the Kazakhstan Republic have been substantiated in the light of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The monograph collaborative writing team, presented by well-known Kazakhstani scientists and specialists and united by a common idea of ​​informing the public and forming a national position on the eve of the 26th Conference of the Parties on Climate to the UNFCCC (COP-26), expresses the hope that the presented analytical materials will be useful both to decision makers for Doctrine on low carbon improvement as well as to all those who are interested in the problems of transition to low-carbon development and decarbonization technologies of the extractive industries.
