A delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, headed by Mr. Nurlan Kurmalayev, Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, participated in the International Conference “Mountains, Climate and Health in Central Asia”, held in Bishkek on 18–19 June 2026.

A delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, headed by Mr. Nurlan Kurmalayev, Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, participated in the International Conference “Mountains, Climate and Health in Central Asia”, held in Bishkek on 18–19 June 2026.

The Kazakh delegation included Mr. Erik A. Baizhunusov, PhD, Chairman of the Board of the National Center for Public Health under the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan; S.Zh. Galiyev, Honorary Director of the D.A. Kunayev Institute of Mining Engineering, Doctor of Technical Sciences and Professor; Prof. Bakhyt K. Yessekina, Doctor of Economics, Member of the Council on Green Economy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Director of the “Green Academy” REC.

During the opening session welcome remarks were delivered by Professor Christopher J. Gerry, Rector of the University of Central Asia; Mr. Almaz Musaev, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic; Mr. Nurlan Kurmalayev, Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan; and Dr. Barkat Fazal, Resident Representative of the AKDN in the Kyrgyz Republic.

During the plenary session, participants highlighted the growing risks posed by climate change to mountain ecosystems and public health, as well as the need to strengthen regional cooperation to enhance climate resilience across the countries of Central Asia.

At the roundtable discussion entitled “Regional Priorities for Climate Resilience and Human Well-Being”, presentations were delivered by Mr. Jergalbek Ukashev, Director of the Permanent Interstate Body “Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction”, Republic of Kazakhstan; Ms. Aizada Barieva, Chief of the Main Department of Ecological and Climate Policy of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic; and Mr. Erik Baizhunusov, Chairman of the Board of the National Center for Public Health under the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Particular interest was generated by the presentation of Mr. Erik A. Baizhunusov, which focused on assessing the impacts of climate change on public health.

The conference is expected to adopt a resolution aimed at advancing scientific research on climate change adaptation, strengthening interstate cooperation, and establishing a Digital Climate Hub for Central Asia.
